Terms of Use — DM Notes
Last updated: 2026-05-26 Effective: Upon installation of the app
These Terms of Use ("Terms") govern your use of DM Notes ("the app"). By installing or using the app, you agree to these Terms. If you don't agree, please uninstall the app.
1. The app, in plain language
DM Notes is a notebook for tabletop RPG dungeon masters and players. It runs on your iPhone or iPad. Most features work offline. Some Pro features call our backend to use OpenAI for generated content (summaries, portraits, name suggestions, encounter prep, tactical tips, backstories).
We do not provide:
- Game rules legal advice (we ship D&D 5e SRD content under OGL 1.0a / CC-BY 4.0 — see Section 7)
- A guarantee that AI-generated content is accurate, lore-consistent, or sanctioned by any tabletop publisher
- A guarantee of any specific feature uptime — Cloudflare and OpenAI are 99.9%-ish in practice but they go down occasionally
2. Subscriptions and In-App Purchases
DM Notes Pro is offered as an auto-renewing subscription:
| Plan | Price (USD) | Trial |
|---|---|---|
| Monthly | $5.99 / month | none |
| Yearly | $29.99 / year | 7-day free trial for new subscribers |
Prices in other currencies follow Apple's standard tier mapping and may vary by region.
Billing happens through Apple. Your iTunes / App Store account is charged at confirmation of purchase and at the start of each renewal period unless canceled at least 24 hours before the period ends.
Cancel anytime: Settings → Apple ID → Subscriptions → DM Notes → Cancel Subscription. Cancellation takes effect at the end of the current period; you keep Pro features until then.
Refunds are handled by Apple. Request via reportaproblem.apple.com. We don't process direct refunds — Apple owns that flow.
Family Sharing is not currently enabled. We may enable it in a future update.
3. Free tier limits
The free tier of DM Notes is limited to:
- 1 active campaign
- 20 NPCs, 10 locations, 5 plot threads per campaign
- No AI features (summaries, portraits, name suggestions, backstories, session prep, encounter generation, tactical tips)
- No iCloud-sync guarantee (best effort)
- No PDF export
- No D&D 5e SRD offline reference
These limits are enforced in-app. We may adjust them with reasonable notice for new installs; existing Pro users are unaffected.
4. Acceptable use
You agree NOT to:
- Use AI features to generate content that violates Apple's App Store Review Guidelines (violent extremism, child sexual abuse material, etc.)
- Reverse engineer the app to bypass paywalls (we won't pursue you for personal use — but we reserve the right to revoke subscriptions abused this way)
- Use the app for any commercial publishing of tabletop content under a license you don't hold (your private campaign notes are your business; selling AI-generated content as a paid module is not the intended use)
If your usage triggers our Worker's rate limits (50+ AI requests/day per device after Pro), we may temporarily throttle further requests. You won't be charged for failed requests.
5. Your content
You own everything you create in DM Notes — your campaigns, your characters, your notes, your recordings. We do not claim any license over your content. We do not analyze, mine, or monetize it.
By using AI features, you authorize us to forward the specific content you submit (the audio you record, the notes you typed, the prompt fields you filled in) to OpenAI via our Cloudflare Worker. OpenAI's API terms apply to that transit. We do not retain your prompts.
You are responsible for backing up your content. Export to PDF or Markdown is available in the app (Pro for PDF, free for Markdown). We are not liable for data loss.
6. Liability
To the extent permitted by law, DM Notes and its operators are not liable for:
- Indirect, incidental, special, consequential, or punitive damages
- Lost campaigns, missed sessions, or game-night disasters
- Hallucinated AI content that misleads a player at the table (it's an AI — verify before quoting it as canon)
- Loss of data from iCloud sync issues, OS bugs, or hardware failures
Maximum aggregate liability is limited to the amount you paid for DM Notes Pro in the 12 months preceding the claim.
7. Third-party content
DM Notes ships a bundled D&D 5e System Reference Document (SRD 5.1) under Wizards of the Coast's Open Game License 1.0a / Creative Commons CC-BY 4.0. The full SRD license text is available at https://dnd.wizards.com/resources/systems-reference-document.
DM Notes is not affiliated with, endorsed, or sponsored by Wizards of the Coast LLC. "Dungeons & Dragons", "D&D", "Pathfinder", "Daggerheart", "Call of Cthulhu", and "Blades in the Dark" are trademarks of their respective owners and are referenced under nominative fair use only.
8. Termination
You can stop using the app at any time by uninstalling. We may suspend or terminate access to AI features if you violate Section 4. Local data on your device is unaffected by such termination.
9. Dispute resolution
These Terms are governed by applicable law, excluding conflict-of-law rules. Any dispute should be handled individually and in good faith first by contacting support@dmnotes.app.
If you live in the EU or UK, you retain all statutory consumer rights, and nothing in these Terms limits those rights.
10. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. The "Last updated" date at the top of this page reflects the canonical version. Material changes will be announced via an in-app notice on the next app launch after the change ships. Continued use after notice means you accept the updated Terms.
